Great Black Backed Gull

The great black backed gull is one of the world's largest gulls, with a wingspan of up to 1.7 metres in length. It is a highly predatory bird.

Heavily built, with a strong bill it is capable of plundering prey such as other sea birds, small mammals like rabbits and young lambs.  On Lundy the breeding pairs favour isolated rocky outcrops or open grassy areas away from other gull colonies such as rat island in the Landing Bay.  Similar in appearance to the Lesser black backed gull, it is however the size of the bird which distinguishes the two species.
