Lundy Island’s annual underwater photography, Splash In! took place on Saturday 29th June and has been described as an successful event by participants and the Warden, Beccy MacDonald: “This year’s Splash In! has been amazing! Enthusiastic competitors started early on Saturday morning armed with their cameras, ready to snap the winning shot. They collected an array of spectacular images showing the wealth of marine life within the Marine Conservation Zone and No Take Zone, which is in its 10th year.”
The competitors could submit up to four original images into the categories of Mega to Macro, Marine Ambience, and Marine Abstract. These were then judged by external judges Stuart Philpot and Sam Stewart, and the winners rewarded with some spectacular prizes. The quality of the images was so high that a new category of ‘Judges Favourites’ was added on the night.
Beccy continued: “Sponsors of this years’ competition have been incredibly generous and included Suunto, Fourth Element, Olympus, Mares, Cameras Underwater, Sea & Sea Ltd, Scuba Travel, AP Valves and Lundy Company.
The overall winner of the competition was Mike Deaton of Appledore Sub-Aqua Club with his image “Jewel of Lundy” (see above) who won a Suunto D6i dive computer (courtesy of Suunto) for this achievement, along with a Buddy Nexus Nitrox dive computer (courtesy of AP Valves) as the image also won 1st prize in the Mega to Macro category.
The Marine Abstract 1st prize of a Prestige Regulator (courtesy of Mares) went to Jonny Aird for his image “Lightbulbs“ (above right) and Mark Lavington received a set of Manta and Remora dive luggage (courtesy of Fourth Element) as 1st prize in the Marine Ambience category for his image “Dancing seal” (left). All in all it’s been a wonderful event and we are all looking forward to Splash In! 2014”
All participants received goodie bags with a Fourth Element hat and camped for free. To mark the occasion, an island BBQ was held with a Lundy Lamb spit roast followed by music from the Dambuskers and friends. Everyone was full of the party spirit and thoroughly enjoyed the festivities. All the entries, winning images and their prizes can be seen on the Lundy Conservation Team Facebook page. Next years’ Splash In! event will be held on Saturday 14th June.
