The event was originally scheduled for June but as always the weather on Lundy dictated our fate and it was not to be. With force 9 gales blowing cancellation was inevitable.
There was a strong demand to re-schedule and with such a fantastic prize list we couldn’t let down our sponsors or our competitors. With time and tides ruling we opted for the August bank holiday weekend.
Saturday 27th August: Event registration opened at 8am, those divers who had come across to the previous evening were ready and raring to go. Cameras were checked and the registration packs were handed out.
After the initial early rush there was a long anxious wait. The wind had picked up over night and there was some speculation as to whether some of the boats would be able to make the crossing, with just 6 entries and dubious weather it looked for a time that we might have a very quiet competition!
By 10am we heard news that at least one boat was on her way. Slowly, but surely the boats began to arrive and it became apparent that the conditions improved the closer to Lundy they got.
After a turbulent start and some resilient determination numbers had picked up and we had 26 entries, a very healthy number considering the tricky crossing! Having reached Lundy the conditions were good, tucked in on the east coast in the lee of the island the competitors began their days diving.
At 5pm everyone began to gather in the Tavern, with the diving done and tents pitched all that was left to do was review their images and select their best pictures over a well deserved pint and some hearty pub grub.
Sunday began with breakfast in the Tavern, and everybody was in good spirits looking forward to the judging. At 11am divers and island visitors gathered at St. Helena’s church to view the photographic submissions and cast their votes for the winning images. We had some fantastic entries with the seals featuring highly this year.
With the votes cast the winners were announced and the prizes were handed out. We had an incredible prize fund of almost £3000 thanks to our hugely generous sponsors. The overall winner was chosen by Nigel Dalby and Neil Hope, picture editor, and went to Owen Atkinson for his image ‘Marbled Seal’
Details of the 2011 prize list are available here.
A huge thank you to all competitors, local charter boats and other supports and of course our sponsors:
