Scarlet & Gold Star Coral

The Scarlet and Gold cup coral is a rare solitary small coral with a hard skeleton and single, anemone-like polyp.

About 1 cm across but not quite as tall this is a vivid orange, red or yellow-orange coral.  Unlike many colonial corals which are made up of numerous individuals fused to each other, the scarlet and gold star coral is solitary and grows alone.  It is found on the extreme lower shore or subtidally attached to rocks, often in caves or in areas exposed to considerable water movement.   Using its stinging tentacles like an anemone it traps food from the the water to feed.  On Lundy these coral are found on the lower shore to subtidal and can be seen by a keen eye while rockpooling in Devil's Kitchen or around Rat Island.
